I have to laugh about people who say "We need to pay a living wage". Here's why;
A person that makes minimum wage and has a spouse and 2 children actually has more money to spend at the end of each month than a person making $20 per hour ($40,000 per year) because of government assistance to the 'poor'. The 'working poor' get 'Child Tax Credits, Earned Income Credits, food stamps, cash aid and free medical care (Medicaid - worth $14,000 per year) that amounts to close to $28,000 per year in 'free' benefits, on top of the $15,000 they earn from their minimum wage job = $43,000 per year, and NO income taxes. The person making $40,000 per year is ineligible for those 'free benefits', and DOES have to pay income taxes.
If a 'minimum wage' earner gets a raise and loses those benefits, they would be far worse off. The minimum wage pretty much sets the upper limit of income to qualify for those 'free' benefits.
Liberals need to reconsider this issue with their 'simplistic' thinking.
