It's easy to overlook the long term trends that will severely impact the U S economy;
1 - The trend towards high unemployment.
2 - The trend towards the high cost of a 'welfare state'.
3 - The huge societal cost of massive debt.
4 - The high cost of the retiring 'baby boom' generation.
5 - The trend toward investments in fast growing economies, limiting growth here.
6 - The demographic trends towards dependence on government services.
In short, we have a general trend towards much higher costs at the same time that we have slower economic growth - a confluence of events that will lead to much higher taxes and stagnant growth, which will, in turn, lead to social unrest.
